What is acne

Acne or pimples is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles are blocked with dead skin cells and sebum. Sebum is the natural oil produced by your skin for lubrication.

Causes

The main causes of pimples are:

  • excessive sebum production
  • excessive keratinization which is basically the production of skin cells
  • bacterial overgrowth
  • hormonal imbalances
  • usage of comedogenic make-up
  • incorrect diet
  • certain medications like steroids

Signs and symptoms

There are 4 grades of acne commonly seen:

  • Grade 1 acne is comedonal, that is blackheads and whiteheads. blackheads or open comedones are follicles plugged with oil, dead skin and bacteria which are open to the surface of the skin. When the follicle is plugged but does not open to the surface, it is called a whitehead.
  • Grade 2 acne is mainly papular acne. This means that along with whiteheads and blackheads, you also have some red bumps on the skin.
  • Grade 3 acne is papulo-pustular, where apart from the above appearance, you also have painful, pus filled lesions
  • Grade 4 acne is nodulocystic where apart from the above mentioned,  you also have painful cysts and big nodules.

Acne appears mostly commonly in the following areas:

  • face
  • neck
  • back
  • chest
  • arms

Is there a treatment available?

Yes, treatment is available, it will depend on the grade and severity of acne that you have.

For grade 1 acne, a simple clean-up with extraction of comedones is enough. Apart from this topical creams such as retinoids also help

For acne infected with bacteria you may require long dose antibiotics to settle the active acne.

Nodulocystic acne may also need intralesional steroid treatments.

Adjuvants to these are light treatments including laser as well as many chemical peels which help with the remission of acne.

In case of hormonal acne, thorough investigation is required to understand the underlying causes and those also need to be properly addressed.

How to avoid acne

Correct diet and lifestyle along with an appropriate skin care routine go a long way in the prevention. Some modifications that you can make include:

  • cutting down the intake of sugar
  • reducing refined flour
  • reducing fried food and junk food
  • regular exercise
  • a proper dermatologist recommended daily skin care routine.
